Welcome to Macland!!! I’ve been using Macs for 4 1/2 years now…can’t really see my self going back to Windows or Linux. The new Macbooks (with the Aluminum body) goes for $1299.00, but Apple is still selling the old White-body Macbook for $999.00; Or you could just do like I did and buy used. I just copped a 17″ G4 PowerBook (to replace the one that was stolen from me last week) off of Craigslist for $500.00….the owner was selling it that cheap because the HDD and the Optical Drive were both dead. No sweat…went to Microcenter and copped a new HDD: Western Digital Scorpion 250GB HDD. Only cost me $90.00; So for $600 I got a Mac that’s powerful enough to run ProTools, Logic Studio 2, Reason 4 and Traktor Scratch as well as handle all of my video encoding work.
Now you may not want to get something as old as mine…no sweat!!! The Craigslist site for Cincinnati had many people selling their “newish” Macbooks for anywhere between $650 to $900. I even saw several iMacs for sell. I’m sure that the Craigslist site for NY has people on there that are trying to sell their Macs as well. Pricing should be the same….maybe a little more since Macs have high re-sell values (as opposed to a Dell or HP with similar specs). Try to find one that still has Apple Care left on it and see if the owner is willing to throw in software for it as well. Whenever you do get yours, holla at me: I got mass software including the full Logic Studio 2 suite (about 60GB worth of apps and sounds) plus Reason 4 (including a fistful of Refills) and Final Cut Studio…..
