Every time Stevie Wonder’s birthday rolls around I think about the original version of Top 5 Breakups because it uses Tuesday Heartbreak. Originally DCIHF was supposed to be fully produced by me and was going to be a more of an EP than LP. Well that didn’t happen and while I do still plan on doing a fully self produced project it’s hard to commit to based on how many great producers I have access to. It’ll happen tho…
At any rate happy belated birthday to one of my favorite musicians of all time, Stevie Wonder. Also shout out to DJ Low Key for sending me this demo who I hope isn’t mad at me for acting like a dick in a non-related email.
The ever elusive Che Grand pops up on the hook to this joint from AKIR and while its a very brief cameo i’ll take it. Here’s hoping we get GRAND by years end
Cult Favorite is Elucid’s group with A.M. Breakups. They have an album out now titled For Madmen Only. It’s better than whatever you are listening to.
The date on this file is 2007 but the song is actually a few years older. I was still living in Ohio and Ilyas’ basement was our “Dungeon”. We had so many albums mapped out and in various phases of finish because Tanya Morgan was supposed to be a side project. One of those albums was an Ilwil (me and Ilyas’ pairing) album produced by Suhburb. Somewhere on a hard drive in my apartment (and probably spread out over several CD-R’s in Ilyas’ studio) lies roughly an album’s worth of demo’s for this album that are in my humble opinion pretty damn amazing. This song is probably the best, most fully realized example but if I remember correctly everything else had immense potential.
I managed to get an album out of Suhburb (Suhburban Sprawl) before he left music for academia and photography but based on me moving away from Cincinnati a lot of the Ilwil material is still just sitting around. Ilyas asked me if I was down to do a Beat Thieves 3 a few months ago but to be honest I ain’t tryna rap over a beat that I can’t call my own. He let me hear some of the stuff he had put together for it and all I can say is hopefully it sees the light of day. Maybe that’s why he signed up for Soundcloud recently.

Word to Von Pea Things Have Changed, For Real. I don’t even think Sputnik is open anymore. It probably is under new ownership or a yoga studio or some shit but at one point in time (specifically when I first moved to NYC) it was a performance venue. This show was before Brooklynati (hell The Bridge for that matter) while Ilyas was still very much a member of the group but he wasn’t at this show. Regardless check out a quick set of songs that mostly ended up on the Tanya Morgan Is A Rap Group mixtape and pardon how drunk we were.
Sittin At The Bar
Walk My Way
Stay Tuned ft Spec Boogie
And You Say ft Che Grand
*That picture was taken after Brooklynati tho. Around the time the Bang N Boogie video was shot. I can tell by my jacket. I believe it was the last tour Ilyas went on with us. This post is what happens when I am sifting through my old hard drive looking for stuff.
